Gibraltar offers free healthcare to all residents through the Gibraltar Health Authority (GHA). Whether you're moving to Gibraltar or already living here, understanding how the healthcare system works is essential.

## Overview of Gibraltar Healthcare

The GHA provides comprehensive healthcare services including:

- Primary care (GP services)
- Hospital care at St Bernard's Hospital
- Emergency services
- Specialist consultations
- Prescription medications
- Mental health services
- Dental care (limited)

Healthcare is funded through social insurance contributions and general taxation.

## Who Is Eligible?

You're entitled to free GHA healthcare if you are:

- A Gibraltar resident with a valid Gibraltar ID card
- Employed in Gibraltar and paying social insurance
- A dependent of someone who qualifies
- A UK or EU citizen with reciprocal healthcare rights

## How to Register

**Step 1: Get Your Gibraltar ID Card**

Before registering with GHA, you need a Gibraltar Civilian Registration Card. Apply at the Civil Status and Registration Office, 323 Main Street.

**Step 2: Register at the Primary Care Centre**

Visit the Primary Care Centre (PCC) at the ICC Building, Europort Road. Bring:

- Your Gibraltar ID card
- Proof of address
- Social insurance number (if employed)

**Step 3: Choose Your GP**

You'll be assigned to a GP practice. Gibraltar has several health centres:

- Primary Care Centre, Europort
- Casemates Health Centre
- Glacis Estate Health Centre

## St Bernard's Hospital

Gibraltar's main hospital provides:

- Accident & Emergency (A&E) — open 24/7
- Inpatient and outpatient services
- Surgical departments
- Maternity ward
- Diagnostic services (X-ray, MRI, blood tests)

Location: St Bernard's Hospital, Harbour Views Road

Emergency: Call 190 or +350 200 72266

## Prescriptions and Pharmacy

With GHA registration, prescriptions are heavily subsidised. Take your prescription to any local pharmacy. Some common medications require small co-payments.

## Dental Care

Basic dental care is available through GHA for children and emergencies. Most adults use private dental clinics.

## What's Not Covered

Some services require private payment or insurance:

- Cosmetic procedures
- Most adult dental care
- Some specialist treatments abroad
- Private hospital rooms

## Cross-Border Healthcare

If you need specialist treatment not available in Gibraltar, GHA can refer you to hospitals in Spain or the UK. The Sponsored Patients Scheme covers approved treatments abroad.
